Stelligent News Test Early™
January 2007

As thought leaders in early software quality, our monthly newsletters offer guidance to the technology community. This month we encourage your thoughts and questions as we explore Continuous Integration.

The key benefit of Continuous Integration is its ability to decrease the time between when an impact causing issue is coded and when it's discovered. Impact causing issues can be, for example:

  • Defects
  • Metrics exceeding predefined thresholds, such as a rise in complexity
By notifying interested parties, like developers and management, when these issues arise, they can be addressed quickly, thus saving time and money-- and increasing a software system's quality at the same time.

If you want to find defects earlier and are wondering how to enhance your current processes without losing focus on business objectives then I highly encourage you to contact us-- we'll be glad to assist you.

And speaking of Continuous Integration, we are quite excited about the pre-order availability of Continuous Integration: Improving Software Quality and Reducing Risk! Authored by Stelligent's CTO Paul Duvall, Stephen M. Matyas III and yours truly, the book is due to hit bookstores in May. Make sure you pre-order your copy now!

Finally, in an unrelated topic, but definitely noteworthy, is the availability of Groovy in Action published by Manning and co-authored by myself. For all those interested in what’s groovy about the Groovy language order your copy today!

Sincerely,

Andrew Glover
President, Stelligent Incorporated

You are now able to pre-order Continuous Integration: Improving Software Quality and Reducing Risk, by Stelligent CTO Paul Duvall, along with co-authors Stelligent President Andrew Glover and Stephen M. Matyas III. The book is due out in May 2007.

Anyone practicing CI or wanting to try it out will benefit from this book-- it'll definitely become an invaluable resource!

Continuous Database Integration solution for the Grameen Foundation

Stelligent recently deployed a Continuous Database Integration Solution for the Microfinance Open Source (Mifos) project, spearheaded by the Grameen Foundation.

By making technology a key strength of microfinance, Mifos will have an enormous impact on the capacity of the microfinance industry and in the efforts to alleviate poverty around the world.

Continuous Integration does several things automatically:

    • Compiles source code after every change
    • Runs developer tests
    • Runs software inspections
    • Notifies developers of problems as soon as they occur

Continuous Integration is a great opportunity to incorporate early quality practices that enable you to quantify development and accelerate the delivery of even higher quality software solutions.

Continuous Integration content on Test Early

The practice of Continuous Integration involves building and testing code early and often rather than waiting until later in the development cycle to find and fix defects.

Since the launch of Test Early, we have explored this topic at length:

    Introduction to Continuous Integration podcast

Kicking off the popular Stelligent Early Quality Podcast Series last summer, Andrew Glover and Paul Duvall introduced the practice of Continuous Integration.

The podcast is a worthwhile way to spend the commute if you're interested in learning more about CI or are curious about what it is and how it may be useful to you.

Featured article: Choosing a Continuous Integration server

Paul Duvall examines a handful of open source CI servers (including Continuum, CruiseControl, and Luntbuild) by utilizing a consistent evaluation criteria and illustrative examples.
